Geoff Parling has underlined his importance to England by playing in their last 17 Test matches since making his debut against Scotland in 2012. He is one of five players from Leicester Tigers in the 2013 British & Irish Lions squad.
The Leicester second-row has proved invaluable to the national team with a series of telling performances in which he proved the dominant force at the lineout as well as a leading tackler. He also claimed his first international try against Scotland at Twickenham in February, the first England lock to score an RBS 6 Nations try in seven years.
Born in Stockton-on-Tees, higher representative honours have beckoned Parling since he appeared for England U16, U18, U19 and U21. He represented England in the U21 Six Nations and IRB Junior World Championships in both 2003 and 2004.
A product of the Newcastle Falcons Academy, he became a first-team regular in 2005/6, often as a blindside flanker, and won the club’s Player of the Year award.
He spent six years at the Flacons, captaining them for a time during 2006/7 in the absence of Wallaby star Matt Burke before joining Leicester in 2009.
He lifted the Premiership title in his first season, on his way to England Saxons selection for the matches against Ireland A and Italy A in 2010 before touring Australia and New Zealand with England that summer.
He appeared against the Australian Barbarians in Perth and New Zealand Maori in Napier but missed out on Test selection.
Neck and knee injuries virtually wiped out the 2010/2011 campaign though returned to make his Test debut off the bench at Murrayfield and a first start against Wales at Twickenham.
He has come to the fore this year with his first Test try against Scotland, the leading line out ball winner in the next match against France and the joint top tackler, with 17, alongside Chris Robshaw and Tom Wood against Wales in the final game.
