Dan Lydiate missed more than six months of action, including this year’s autumn internationals and the RBS 6 Nations, with successive ankle and hamstring injuries before making a welcome return for Newport Gwent Dragons in March.
Lydiate was raised in Llandrindod Wells and is a product of the Dragons academy. He was an ever-present member of the Wales U20 back row for the Six Nations campaign in 2006/07 and progressed to the Dragons senior side at the end of that season.
Early in the 2007/08 campaign he suffered a serious neck injury in a Heineken Cup group match away to Perpignan which ruled him out for the rest of the season and raised doubts as to whether he would ever play again. He recovered to become a mainstay in the Dragons side, however, and his performances for the Gwent region caught the attention of Wales coach Warren Gatland in 2009.
The blindside flanker has made a huge impact on the international scene since making his debut for Wales as a replacement against Argentina four years ago. Lydiate established himself in the No 6 shirt in the 2010 autumn series when coach Shaun Edwards described him as Wales’ best player across the four Tests.
He made five appearances at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, helping Wales to the semi-finals where they were narrowly defeated by France. He formed part of an extremely effective back row unit in New Zealand, alongside regional colleague Toby Faletau and Wales, and now Lions, captain Sam Warburton.
Lydiate finished second on the tournament's top-tacklers list, behind only fellow 2013 Lions tourist Faletau.
In the 2012 RBS 6 Nations Championship, Lydiate received the Player of the Tournament award after featuring in every game bar the opener against Ireland and receiving man of the match awards against Scotland and France.
