Owen Farrell has taken senior rugby by such a storm that has was nominated for the 2012 IRB Player of the Year award. The Saracens outside half missed out to All Blacks captain Richie McCaw for the top award, although three days later he played a vital role in England’s record win over New Zealand with 17 points at Twickenham.
However, his nomination alongside Dan Carter and Frederic Michalak capped a staggering rise in such a short space of time.
And now he will create history alongside defence coach Andy Farrell as the first father-and-son to tour on the same British & Irish Lions tour.
His uncle, Sean O’Loughlin, captained Wigan and also played rugby league for both England and Great Britain. Five years ago, Owen became the youngest player at the time to make his debut in the professional game, less than one month after his 17th birthday, and his combination of game management, kicking and a strong defence saw him make a swift impact.
He represented England at U16, as captain, U17 and U18 and was part of the England U20 team that won the Grand Slam in 2011 and reached the IRB Junior World Cup final.
That final in Italy, against New Zealand, came just a month after Farrell scored 17 points in Saracens 22-17 won over Leicester Tigers in the Premiership final.
He made his Test debut in the 2012 Calcutta Cup game against Scotland at centre before he was handed the No 10 jersey against Wales. He played in each of England’s next 15 Test matches, including a man of the match display against Ireland in this year’s 6 Nations, until thigh injury ruled him out of the match against Italy.
A product of St George’s School in Harpenden, he is studying Business at Hertfordshire University.
