The British & Irish Lions
Tour to South Africa 2009
The Lions Trust was founded in 2002 as the Official Charitable Trust of the British & Irish Lions.
Its broad aim is to help the Lions’ former players in need of assistance and to help further the development of the game as a whole, as well as assisting with community projects in the countries visited by the Lions.
As part of its wider remit the Lions Trust will work, in association with SARU, to help provide legacy projects in South Africa to coincide with the 2009 Tour.
The main fundraising initiatives tend to take place around tour years, with the Lions Tour to New Zealand in 2005 providing the focus for the first main source of funds.
Some of the money raised has already been put to good use, by way of assistance to some former Lions who have experienced some form of hardship through health, financial or other problems and via the four Home Unions’ own charitable trusts.
