Alex Cuthbert scored two tries in the RBS 6 Nations finale against England, to help Wales defend their Championship crown and deny the auld enemy a first Grand Slam in a decade. What made the feat all the more staggering was the fact that the 23-year-old scored with a grade-2 tear of his hamstring.
In total, the Cardiff Blues wing crossed the whitewash four times during the RBS 6  Nations to become the tournament’s top try scorer in 2013. He clearly has a nose for the line with nine tries for Wales in 18 Tests and 22 from 31 for the Blues.
Remarkably he only took up rugby at the age of 16 while at Hartpury College, where he was coached by former Wales international coach Allan Lewis.
He had previously focused on competitive show jumping, athletics and football, where he had been a promising striker on the books of Gloucester City.
But he turned his attention to rugby and first came to the attention of Wales selectors while playing for Marauders RFC in the Middlesex Sevens. He was invited to train with the Wales Sevens Squad and later moved to Cardiff to study Sports and Business Development at UWIC.
He has twice represented Wales Sevens in Hong Kong, where Warren Gatland’s men kick-off the 2013 tour against the Barbarians on June 1. He reached the Bowl Final in 2010, in a team that also contained Wales flanker Justin Tipuric.
He soon graduated to the Blues academy and plied his trade for Cardiff RFC before enjoying a meteoric rise in the last two years.
The 6ft 6ins, 17 stone flyer made he debut for the Blues in September 2011 and was quickly selected by Warren Gatland following the World Cup.
He made his international debut in Wales’ December Test with Australia in the same year and has started all but one of his country’s matches since.
