Fitzgerald was weaned on rugby from a babe in arms with a rugby ball in the cot from birth, as the son of former Ireland Prop Des there was a strong tradition of the sport in the family. He combined rugby with study at Blackrock but also helped the college to a 65th Schools Cup Final at the end of the 2005-6 season. His debut for Leinster senior team was in September 2006.

At Ireland Schools level he was part of the Ireland Schools XV that completed a clean sweep of wins in 2005 and with it won the Irish Examiner Young Rugby Player of the Year Award.

His senior debut came in the final game at Lansdowne Road against the Pacific Islands in November 2006. Called up by Eddie O’Sullivan for the RBS 6 Nations games against Wales and England, he established himself as the first choice wing that continued with Declan Kidney’s arrival through the Guinness Internationals in November 2008 and as part of the Grand Slam winning Irish side of the RBS 6Nations 2009.
