Sean O’Brien will be making his first British & Irish Lions tour having been uncapped by his country the last time Britain and Ireland’s elite were in the southern hemisphere.

The 26-year-old flanker made his Ireland debut against Fiji in November of 2009 and has since established himself as a key member of the Ireland pack.

O’Brien has started all but one of Ireland’s last 15 matches in the RBS 6 Nations and now has 27 caps to his name. He was an ever present in this year’s Championship, playing the full 80 minutes in four of the five fixtures.

He has started in all three back row positions for Ireland but has now made the openside flank his own. O’Brien has worn the No7 shirt in his last 15 starts for his country, with his last start elsewhere coming on the blindside flank back against France in August 2011.

He was forced to sit out Ireland’s autumn Tests against South Africa and Argentina following hip surgery and has featured in approximately a third of Leinster’s competitive fixtures this season.

The Leinster Academy product won Heineken Cup crowns with the senior side in 2011 and 2012 and was named ERC Player of the Year during the first of those continental triumphs. He also started in the Amlin Challenge Cup final against Stade Francais Paris in Dublin, earning himself and his team another major Euriopean title.

He was chosen as the Guinness Rugby Writers of Ireland Player of the Year in the same season before being named as one of the Top Five Star Players at the 2011 World Cup. He was a member of the Ireland U20 squad that won Grand Slam honours in 2007 and has also made eight appearances for his country at U21 level.
