Hines, who qualifies for Scotland through a maternal grandfather from Govan in Glasgow, played rugby league for North Sydney Bears at U19 and U21 levels in his native Australia before switching to the union code with Manly, from where he won New South Wales U21 honours. He joined Gala in 1998 and helped the club to the double of Premier Division 2 title and Scottish Cup in 1998.

Hines was capped for the Scotland side just five days after arriving as an emergency replacement for Scott Murray on the 2000 summer tour to New Zealand.

In 2002 he played in both Tests on Scotland’s tour to North America. He was released from the senior squad to again play a huge role in the A team and was restored to A team captaincy against Wales A. In 2003 Hines played for Scotland A.

He was selected in the 2003 World Cup. Hines started in six successive internationals for Scotland in 2006, but he missed the Autumn Test against Australia and the opening match of the 2007 RBS Six Nations Championship against England. He played in four of Scotland’s five matches in the 2007 Rugby World Cup and in the Six Nations Championship in 2008 he started in all five matches.

Injury kept him out of the 2009 Six Nations squad until he returned as a replacement in the March game against Ireland at Murrayfield.
