Richard Hibbard emerged as Wales’ top choice hooker during the 2013 RBS 6 Nations title triumph, playing in four of the five games. At club level at the Ospreys he has had to fight with Grand Slam hooker Huw Bennett for recognition and this season had 2009 British & Irish Lions test hooker Matthew Rees and Ken Owens to deal with. A product of local rugby in Aberavon, he launched his career at Taibach and Aberavon Quins before playing for the Wizards. A hugely physical player, he played rugby league for Aberavon Fighting Irish and made one appearance for the Wales A rugby league side in their 28–18 win over England in Aberavon in 2003. He moved to Swansea, where he played 81 matches, and his Ospreys debut came against Munster in the opening game of the 2004/05 season. He has since helped the region win four RaboDirect PRO12 titles and the EDF Energy Cup. His first Welsh call-up came for the 2006 tour to Argentina, when he came off the bench in the first Test against the Pumas in Puerto Madryn to join fellow Ospreys debutants Ian Evans and Alun Wyn Jones. His first six caps were all gained away from home and he made his first start in the second Test againt South Africa in 2008. His RBS 6 Nations debut came off the bench against England in 2011 and he was a replacement in all five matches in that campaign. His first RBS 6 Nations start came against France in round two this year and he bagged his first Welsh try in the win over Scotland at Murrayfield. He toured Australia with Wales in the summer of 2012, coming on as a replacement in the second Test.
