Tom Youngs joins scrum half brother Tom in the 2013 British & Irish Lions squad and they will become the 14th set of brothers to play for the Lions. He started life as a centre for Leicester Tigers, but has sealed a remarkable switch in positions to become his country’s leading hooker. Having made his senior debut for Tigers in 2006 he was regarded a good enough centre to represent England from U16 to U20 level and earned an England Sevens call for the IRB World Series in 2007.
However, when he was sin-binned for fighting with an opposing Saracens prop in a second team game, Tigers coach Heyneke Meyer suggested he should play at hooker.
Having enjoyed scrimmaging sessions during previous age-grade tours with England tight-head prop Dan Cole, Tom accepted the idea and forged a new career.
Brought up on the family’s arable farm in Norfolk, he combined the pace of footwork of a three-quarter allied with the aggression and physicality suited for front-row rugby.
He went on loan to Nottingham in 2009 and despite not playing the position before, he went on to play hooker in 60 matches over two seasons and was named as players’ player of the year.
He started alongside younger brother Ben for the first time in the EDF Energy Cup match at Bath in 2008-09 and a senior call for the tour of South Africa united the brothers for their country for the first time.
Tom played in both midweek matches against the South African Barbarians South and North but had to wait until the game against Fiji at Twickenham in November for his first cap. Tom has since appeared in nine consecutive Test matches, eight of them in the starting line up.
Youngs made his first appearance at hooker for Tigers in the ‘A’ League win over Gloucester in January 2009, ended the 2011/12 season with an LV= Cup winner’s medal and a first appearance in a Premiership Final and has gone on to make 50 appearances for the club.
Tom is also the son of Nick Youngs, the England scrum half capped six times in 1983-84.
