Dan Cole has become the cornerstone of the England scrum since making his international debut as a replacement in the victory over Wales at Twickenham in 2010. The Leicester prop has missed just one of England’s last 41 Tests and started all five games in 2011 World Cup and both the 2012 and 2013 RBS 6 Nations Championship. Never more has he had an impact in the white jersey than with his formidable performance in the 21-20 victory over Australia at Sydney in June 2010.
Despite suffering a cut and badly swollen left eye, his sheer determination was hailed by team-mate Lewis Moody as inspirational, in only his seventh Test appearance.
Born in Leicester, he is a former pupil of Martin Johnson’s old school in Market Harborough and began his rugby as a flanker with South Leicester RFC.
He swiftly emerged through the Tigers Academy and spent two successful seasons on loan at Bedford Blues between 2006 and 2008.
International honours began with his part in England U18 winning the Association European Rugby (AER) festival in Lille and he played in every game in the U19 Six Nations and IRB World Championship in 2006, in which he helped the side to a third place finish in Dubai.
The following year, he was a member of the England U20 squad in the Six Nations Championship and went on to start all four England Saxons’ games in 2009, including three in the Barclays Churchill Cup.
Working under the likes of British & Irish Lions forwards coach Graham Rowntree at Welford Road, his Test career unfolded after just 21 senior starts for Tigers.
Short-listed for PRA Young Player of the Year in 2009/10, he played in three successive Premiership finals and has become ever-present for England and has gone on to make more than 100 appearances for Leicester.
His scored his one Test try with only his third cap, against Ireland in 2010.
