Richie Gray wins selection for his first Lions tour having become one of the stand-out performers in the Scotland pack since making his international debut in 2010.
The former Kelvinside Academy student, who played his club rugby at Glasgow Hawks before joining Glasgow Warriors in 2008, represented Scotland at every age-grade level from U17-U20. He was heavily involved for Scotland U20s in the 2009 Six Nations and captained the side in their 35-20 victory over Ireland. By the end of the tournament he had started every match and he repeated the feat during the Junior World Championships in Japan.
Gray made his senior debut the following year, coming off the bench in Scotland’s RBS 6 Nations defeat to France. He continued to make an impact as a replacement and earned his first start in the autumn international against New Zealand in Edinburgh.
Since then Gray has amassed 31 caps, scoring his first and so far only try in a man of the match performance against Ireland in 2012.
He was a key part of the Scotland side that claimed a famous victory over Australia in Newcastle last June, playing every minute and making a colossal 17 tackles in the 9-6 success.
His 2013 RBS 6 Nations was cut short due to a hamstring injury picked up against Wales – a setback that means the 23-year-old hasn’t featured since that narrow loss at Murrayfield in March.
On the domestic stage, Gray left Glasgow Warriors to join Sale Sharks after four years in 2012, but left the Aviva Premiership club at the end of April. He will join the French side Castres Olympique in July, but will be 'Unattached' during the Lions tour.
