Ferris was a relatively late starter to rugby as he started at thirteen, a former pupil of Friends School, Lisburn. He joined Ulster Academy and in the 2005-6 season secured a development contract with Ulster Rugby. Representational honours came with selection for Irelands U20 side for the Rugby World Cup in 2005.

He debuted for Ulster first team against the Border Reivers in October 2005.

The Armagh man’s first cap came for Irelands senior team in November 2006 against the Pacific Islands. He was selected for the Ireland squad for the 2007 World Cup but was an unused reserve by O’Sullivan.

Notably his recent form during the RBS 6Nations saw him start in all of Ireland’s Grand Slamming games.
