Billy Twelvetrees became the fourth recruit for the 2013 British & Irish Lions when he was called up from the England squad in Argentina to add cover to the back division ahead of the fifth game on tour against the Waratahs. The 24-year-old Gloucester playmaker made a try-scoring debut for England at the start of the 2013 RBS 6 Nations when he crossed for a try in the Calcutta Cup victory over Scotland. He continued to play an integral role during the Championship, starting against Ireland and coming off the bench against Italy and Wales. He scored again in England’s 32-3 win over Argentina in Salta the weekend before his call-up by the Lions.
He climbed to the top of the rugby pyramid via an unconventional route, having earned no age-grade honours for his country. He began playing rugby with his brothers at Pullborough RFC and went on to represent Haywards Heath, Leicester Lions and Nottingham. But it was at Bedford Blues, while in the Leicester Tigers academy, that he began his rapid rise to prominence. He made an immediate impact with the Blues, crossing for four tries on his debut against Manchester in 2008, and finished the season as the Championship’s joint top try-scorer with 18 touchdowns.
He soon returned to the Leicester Tigers fold and he produced another stunning debut after a shock call-up. He was thrust into the starting line-up for a Heineken Cup clash with the Ospreys in 2009 just 10 minutes before kick-off when Dan Hipkiss fell ill and he delivered the goods again with a 14 point, man-of-the-match performance.
He had his first taste of international rugby in the Tigers’ 26-15 defeat to an Australia XV in 2010, kicking all of his side’s points. He made his England Saxons debut in 2011 and featured throughout their Churchill Cup campaign.
In January 2012, he joined Gloucester and he has gone on to establish himself in the Cherry & Whites midfield. A year after announcing his move he was handed his international debut by Stuart Lancaster.
