Ian Evans has become an ever-present feature in the Wales set-up and played in every match of their back-to-back RBS 6 Nations titles. He is one of five members of the Ospreys pack heading to Hong Kong and Australia with the 2013 British & Irish Lions.
Despite playing just 30 matches for his country, he has already racked up three Championship crowns. He was even described as Wales’ lucky charm having gone unbeaten in the tournament until this season’s loss to Ireland.
He began playing rugby at Abercwmboi RFC before joining Pontypridd RFC and then Swansea RFC. While at the All Whites he was picked up by the Ospreys academy. The giant lock represented Wales at both Under 19 and Under 21 level and was part of the latter side’s Grand Slam in 2005, where he formed an impressive boiler house partnership with Bradley Davies.
He made his Ospreys debut in the same year and he was soon called into the Wales senior set-up, making his debut against Argentina in June 2006.
He galloped 60 metres to score a memorable try on his debut against the Pumas but has failed to cross the whitewash for his country since.
The 28-year-old was then part of the Wales side that claimed a 29-29 draw with Australia in the following autumn but from there his international career became intermittent due to a succession of knee injuries.
He returned during 2008 and played an integral role in the 2008 Grand Slam but was again derailed by injury, this time chest and ankle problems.
Nonetheless, he stayed injury free at the beginning of 2011 and despite missing out on the World Cup he forced his way back into Warren Gatland’s plans for the December Test with the Wallabies.
He has since established himself as one of the first names on the Wales team-sheet and started every match of their triumphant Six Nations campaigns in 2012 and 2013.
