Toby Faletau burst onto the international stage in 2011 and has established himself as one of Wales’ most consistent performers. The Tongan-born No.8 has started 26 of their 29 matches since making his debut against the Barbarians and has played his part in two RBS 6 Nations titles.
Toby is renowned for his athleticism and is equally effective with ball in hand or in defence with a tireless work-rate. The 22-year-old moved to South Wales in 1998, when his father, Tongan lock Kuli Faletau, joined Ebbw Vale. He grew up with cousins and England internationals Billy and Mako Vunipola, whose father Fe’ao also moved to the steel-making town.
Faletau was picked up by Newport Gwent Dragons while studying at Bristol Academy of Sport at Filton College. He made his regional debut against Edinburgh in 2009.
Later that year he was selected by Wales Under 20s and he featured heavily in the 2010 Six Nations and Junior World Cup.
His scintillating form for the Dragons saw him force his way into the senior set-up. He was an unused squad member throughout the autumn and RBS 6 Nations but picked up the Young Player award for the Magners League, Welsh Rugby Writers association and Welsh Rugby Players Association.
He made his international debut against the Barbarians in June, 2011, becoming the first Pacific Islander to represent Wales. He retained his place in Warren Gatland’s squad for the World Cup and announced himself as a global star. He started all seven of Wales’ matches and was the tournaments top ball carrier and tackler, with a 100 per cent completion rate.
The Dragons powerhouse has continued to excel for both region and country, making 57 appearances for the Gwent region and playing an integral role in Wales’ Championship success.
