1927 | Argentina

Lions Rugby 1927 ArgentinaThe educational element had long been erased from the Lions brief in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, but missionary work was still available on other continents. In 1927, the Lions toured Argentina, playing nine matches and sparking an upsurge in interest in rugby in that country.

The Lions carried the emblem of the four Home Unions still worn today and were managed by former RFU president James 'Bim' Baxter, who would also be in charge of the 1930 campaign in New Zealand and Australia.

Captained by Scotland lock David MacMyn, the 23-man party included 11 internationals, as well as four players who would also tour Australia and New Zealand three years later: Carl Aarvold, Roger Spong, Jimmy Farrell and Wilfred Sobey, the last going as vice-captain.

Invited by the River Plate union and bankrolled by donations and fund-raisers, the 1927 Lions were way out of their opponents' league and rattled up 295 points while conceding just nine.

Four of the matches were Tests, all of which were won by MacMyn's men, by margins of 37-0, 46-0, 34-3 and 43-0. Despite the one-sided nature of the contests, the tourists drew large crowds and left the hosts with both a handsome profit and a renewed appetite for the game.
