Robinson, who ended his stellar playing career at the close of the 2006/07 season, has clearly had second thoughts over his future after initially commenting that he would never become a coach.
"Times have changed - I did once say I'd never play rugby union," said Robinson, who appeared in five Tests for the Lions after converting from rugby league.
"What I've learned from this is to "never say 'never' !
"The offer caught me off guard, to be honest, but life's about challenges and working with Kingsley (Jones), Phil (Roach) and the other coaches is an opportunity not to be missed.
"It's going to be different (coaching former playing colleagues) but it's a mutual respect and a work in progress.
"I'm sure I can add something to what is a very good side at the moment. Having seventeen years at the top in both codes, what I've gained over the years, I can't just bury."
Jones, Sale's new director of rugby who steps up from his previous head coach role, believes that Robinson's character and experience will pay dividends for the 2005/06 Guinness Premiership champions.
"Jason is back for rugby reasons," said Jones.
"I want people I can trust, with the same attitudes as myself. Jason is hard working, a winner, he's humble and honest."
