The first was the Reverend Matthew Mullineux, who dropped himself after the first Test defeat to the Wallabies in 1899 and handed over the captaincy to Gloucester and England back row forward Frank Stout. The Lions won the next three Tests and the series.
In 1904, Scotland's David Bedell-Sivright picked up an injury that forced him to miss the second and third Tests in Australia. Wales wing Teddy Morgan took the captain's arm band and led the Lions to a clean sweep in the three match series and then went on to lead the team in the one and only Test against the All Blacks.
In 1950, Bleddyn Williams led the Lions in the first Test in Australia in place of the injured tour skipper Karl Mullen, but Mullen returned in time to play in the series clinching second Test in Sydney a week later. Earlier in the tour Williams had also led the Lions in two of the four Tests in New Zealand.
If you are looking for omens for Saturday then it is interesting to note that every time the Lions have had to find a stand-in for their skipper in Australia they have won the series. Will it happen again this weekend?
In more recent tours, Ireland's Brian O'Driscoll, a candidate to lead the Lions in Sydney on Saturday, didn't captain his 2005 squad in the 'home' Test against Argentina and then picked up an injury in the first Test in New Zealand. Michael Owen captain the team against the Pumas and fellow Welshman Gareth Thomas took over in New Zealand.
