McGeechan's men were penalized heavily during Saturday's 26-21 defeat to the Springboks in Durban and the Scot is determined to ensure there is no repeat when the Lions travel to Pretoria and Johannesburg for the remaining two rubbers of the three-match series.

"Those penalties killed us and we have to find out what was happening at the scrum," said McGeechan.

"It comes down to interpretation. We have a protocol to review this game and then look forward to the next Tests and we will be doing that."

England prop Phil Vickery was signaled out repeatedly by referee Bryce Lawrence during the series opener and McGeechan admits both he and his former Wasps charge were bitterly disappointed with the penalty count against the Lions at the set piece.

"Phil is disappointed and that's why we need clarification," added McGeechan.

"He's a very experienced player who has played at the highest level for a long time.

"We will meet with the IRB Referees chief Paddy O'Brien and the referees for the next two games, probably on Friday."
