The 24-year-old is among the favourites for a second row spot with the Lions next summer but he admits he hasn't quite hit the heady heights he's aiming for in his short time in England.
"I think it's been a so-so start for me," Gray told the Manchester Evening News.
"I'm still finding my feet and getting used to the guys and I'll definitely get there.
"It's not been easy at all but I didn't expect it to be. It's been very tough coming here against some very good teams and some very good players.
"Some things have gone well one week and then some other things the next. Each week represents a different challenge so it's been good from that point of few.
"But I know there is a lot more to come and hopefully, the more I play, I'll get better and better."
Sale host London Welsh at their new Salford City Stadium home on Friday night hoping to jump above the newly-promoted outfit in the Premiership table.
Gray and co currently sit 11th in the standings with just one point to their name after defeats to Exeter, Saracens and Harlequins, while the Exiles head north fresh from celebrating their maiden win last Sunday.
"Results haven't gone our way and it's been a frustrating start but we hope to put that right this weekend," added Gray.
"Getting that first win is huge in terms of building confidence and momentum so this Friday is a massive game.
"Certain aspects of our game have gone well one week and not the next so it's about getting the fine detail right. But we feel we're very close and hopefully we can do it on Friday."
