De Villiers left the post of South Africa Under-21 boss after the IRB Under-21 World Championship, where his team, who triumphed in 2005, reached the final.
He was due to join up with the Southern Spears in the Super 14 in 2007, but this has been put on ice.
And now the highly-rated coach is facing the prospect of going into the new year unemployed.
"There are no prospects for me for next year," De Villiers told Die Burger Oos Kaap newspaper.
"It seems someone thinks I am capable of coaching a team!"
However, without a team it looks likely De Villiers will head overseas if nothing materialises at the start of the new campaign.
The amiable coach was believed to be in line for Jake White's job when the Bok mentor came under pressure at the end of the season, but White kept his job.
De Villiers' assistant, Dumisani Mhani, recently helped with the coaching of the Zambian national side which played in the African Confederation competition.
