Steyn has played wing, fly-half and full-back, but now wants to settle at inside centre.
Provided he stays clear of injury the 20-year-old is likely to be a key player when the Springboks clash with the 2009 British and Irish Lions.
"I've been pretty much selected all over the place, but I'd like to play centre from now on," he said.
"But I'll see what happens after this tour. I'm going to have to go back to the Sharks (for the Super 14) and start all over again. A lot can happen between now and the next Test season, but while Jean (de Villiers, who has a bicep injury) is not here, I'm going to do my best in the No 12 jersey."
Not that Steyn is taking his place for granted. He said: "It's certainly not a case of the jersey belonging to anyone or me borrowing it from Jean.
"Competition for places is always good, but for now, inside centre's my position and I need to give it my best every time I go out there."
Steyn claimed he enjoyed playing in an experienced team at the World Cup, saying: "I've got a lot of hard work ahead of me, that's for sure. I'm learning all the time and it was awesome having guys like Butch (James) and Percy (Montgomery) close to me at the World Cup. They really helped me a lot.
"It doesn't help thinking about the future and what will happen and where Jean and myself are going to slot in. What matters is the now, what happens from today to tomorrow - the future will take care of itself."
