Wasps director of rugby McGeechan could return to the role of Lions head coach which he held in 1989, 1993 and 1997.
And Robinson, now coaching Edinburgh, claims the 61-year-old Scot is perfect for the role.
Robinson described McGeechan as "an outstanding choice" for the position, and added: "I think he's a quality coach. His depth of knowledge and understanding of the game in all its facets - attack, defence, set-piece - is just phenomenal."
McGeechan led the Lions to series victories over Australia and South Africa, either side of a 2-1 series defeat in New Zealand. Sir Clive Woodward's Lions were whitewashed 3-0 in New Zealand in 2005.
Scotland coach Frank Hadden has revealed he could have a role to play with the Lions in two years' time.
He said: "I have been asked if I am available for the Lions, and of course I am.
"It would be an honour to be involved."
The role of tour manager for the three-Test series against the world champion Springboks has been filled by Wales legend GerGerald Davies, while Scot Andy Irvine was named as chairman of the Lions board.
