The Griquas' recent Vodacom Cup success has resulted in 13 players from the p being called up for the first match of the Lions' 10-game tour.
They include Riaan Viljoen, a highly-rated utility back who claimed the man-of-the-match award during the Griquas' final win over the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld last Saturday.
Six members of the initial squad possess Super 14 experience, with Griquas pivot Naas Olivier joined by team-mate and star centre Hanno Coetzee, full back / wing Bjorn Basson, scrum-half Sarel Pretorius and tight-head prop Bees Roux, as well as Deon van Rensburg of the Leopards.
The Leopards provide 10 representatives to the squad, with the four Pumas also include. Neither the Griffons nor the Valke, the two other major sides in the union, have a single representative in the squad.
The Royal XV are one of two representative teams the Lions will face in South Africa, with the other being the Southern Kings (previously the Coastal XV).
