Giteau sustained a fracture to his knee cap during the Wallabies' loss to England at Twickenham and was forced to miss the last two games against Ireland and Wales.
The 23-year-old had scans on the knee last week, revealing a chip of bone which needs to be removed, and he faces at least six weeks on the sidelines.
"I will rest for 10 days straight after the surgery and then start some light rehab work in the pool and on the (exercise) bike after that," said Giteau.
"I should be okay to start running in six weeks and hopefully be okay for the first game of the season."
The veteran of 30 Tests is aiming at being ready to return to action in time for the start of the inaugural Super 14 competition, when he will be lining up for his fourth season with the ACT Brumbies.
