Warren Gatland's pride of British & Irish Lions gathered for the first time at Syon Park today and got down to business - signing autographs, collecting kit, getting weighed and measured and being photographed. It was a day of getting to know each other and learning about the enormity of the task ahead. Here is an overview of the day.

The British & Irish Lions players will meet for the first time today for what is called 'Messy Monday'. They will get kitted out, learn about their itinerary and hear about their goals for the next few months. The work behind the scenes has been going on for a number of years and when the squad was announced it provided Logistics Manager Guy Richardson with the last piece of his Lions jigsaw. John Spencer knows all about the thrill of being selected for a British & Irish Lions tour. The former England centre toured in 1971 and is now a member of the Lions Committee. We asked him for his thoughts on the 2013 squad and if it brought back memories of when he was chosen more than 40 years ago for one of the greatest of all Lions tours.

Ahead of the Lions squad selection, Simon Lazenby talks to Peter Winterbottom and Mike Teague about their challenge, Ride Of The Lions that will see them cycle 1000km between Melbourne and Sydney during the forthcoming Lions Tour and Ibrar Ali and Andrew Cook who will be joined by Prince Harry later this winter on their challenge to the South Pole. Both challenges will be raising funds for Walking With The Wounded.

Mike Gibson holds the record with Willie John McBride of touring with the British & Irish Lions five times. He holds the record for the most games played in a Lions jersey by a back and featured in 12 tests in his outstanding career. Had it not been for examinations, he might even have fitted in two more Tests on his first tour in 1966.
