Sergio Parissee will miss eight weeks of next season
Italian skipper Sergio Parisse has been banned for eight weeks after being found guilty of eye gouging in his side's 27-6 defeat to New Zealand in Christchurch at the weekend.
Parisse was cited for "making contact with the eyes or eye area" of the All Blacks lock Isaac Ross. IRB judicial officer Paul Tully iasued the suspension today.
Tully ruled the offence had been reckless rather than intentional, with mitigating factors including the fact that the contact was brief, occurred in the open, there was no injury to Ross and the initial contact was with Ross's cheek before slipping into the eye.
As Parisse, who plays Stade Français in Paris, is now in his five-week off-season following the one-off Test his suspension will start on 2 August.
