Not even the return to fitness of Victor Matfield and Bryan Habana could help the Bulls' cause and they have now lost their grip on the top spot as the Waratahs, Chiefs and fellow South African side the Sharks march on.
Having slipped 10 points behind in the first-half, the Bulls managed to level the scores at 13-13 on the hour with a penalty from Morne Steyn.
But it was a short-lived moment of glory for the visitors as Stephen Brett with a penalty in the final quarter to give the former champions the victory.
