But since returning the flanker has featured brightly for the Blues in their 34-20 defeat to Leinster and most recently in their 29-12 victory over Edinburgh.
And Warburton, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Saturday, insists while it is great to be back in action he hopes his future can be sorted sooner rather than later.
"Staying is my preferred choice," said Warburton. "As a player, it is quite an unusual position to be in. But I always think things will work out for the best.
"You just have to get on with it. You have to accept that when you come into sport, it is an unstable job. You very rarely get a contract of any more than three years.
"The Leinster match was probably the best game back I've ever had from injury and it was probably one of my better games for the Blues.
"I got five turnovers and I thought I was quite unlucky not to get a few others. For my first game back I surprised myself. I really enjoyed it. It's great to be back."
