It's a role North has performed before however - he moved there for the last half an hour against the Qantas Wallabies in the autumn and he has performed the role for Northampton Saints on more than one occasion this season.
Against France he will partner fellow Lion Jamie Roberts and they will come up against France pair Wesley Fofana and Mathieu Bastareaud - and it's a battle that North is relishing.
"To put on the Welsh jersey [in] any position is happy days. So for me it's another challenge," he said.
"I've started there for Northampton, played in there a lot recently and trained there - something to look forward to.
"Wing is ideally where I have been playing for the past few years but every day I get more comfortable.
"There's a lot more going on [in the centre]; there's a lot more people running left, right and centre.
"Bastareaud is obviously a big guy, physical as well.
"Fofana - he is a ball player, he's got great foot work and a turn of pace so it's a good front-up for me and Jamie."
