Kearney still toured with the Lions but did not feature in the Test matches but he believes he is now back to his very best.
"I got a really good, seven-week pre-season in," Kearney told the Irish Independent. "It was very different to my last pre-season. The strength and the conditioning staff individualised it a lot more for me than usual.
"I definitely find that the older I'm getting, the more I am beginning to really understand my body and the better ways to maintain its performance.
"Pilates twice a week has been massive for me and something that I'd never really tried before. I've had a lot more soft tissue and deep tissue massages. They're the only things that I've been doing differently.
"But you have to remember, there's a huge amount of luck involved in it. It's all about maintaining your body as best as you can but nothing can stop you picking up freak injuries.
"But listen, when you're playing more minutes than Jamie Heaslip in one season, you're doing something right."
