Jones, 27, has been forced to swap his No8 shirt for a spot on the blindside flank following the all-action displays of Andy Powell but Gatland has reiterated his belief in the capabilities of the potential Lions leader.
"I've got no doubts in giving Ryan the armband again," said Gatland.
"He's continuing to develop as a captain and a leader and he's doing a great job.
"He can play either six or eight equally well but he really needs to start the Six Nations quickly.
"He was slow at both the start of the Six Nations and then in the Autumn but was back to his best against Australia where his work-rate and accuracy were absolutely outstanding.
"Possibly he worries too much about the other players and the captaincy because there's a lot of demands as captain both on and off the field.
"But we've spoken to him about that and hopefully when we get up and running, he just concentrates on his own performance."
