Steenkamp will find out if he requires surgery later today, but he is expected to be out of action for less than a month.
"The only serious injury in the team is to Gurthro, who broke his hand," Blue Bulls doctor Org Strauss said on Sunday.
"We will know the full extent of the damage after he has seen a specialist in the morning but I suspect that he will be out for only three weeks at the most."
If Strauss' evaluation is proven right, Steenkamp will be back in action in time for next month's Currie Cup semi-finals.
Although Steenkamp will definitely miss next weekend's clash with the Cheetahs, World Player of the Year Bryan Habana is expected to train with the squad today after recovering from shoulder and knee injuries.
