Joseph happy Lions squad is bonding nicely

The key process of merging four nations into a single British & Irish Lions squad is already well under way, according to centre Jonathan Joseph.

The Bath centre, who is preparing for his first Lions Tour, spoke to the media at the end of the first week of intensive training at the Lions’ camp in Wales.

Joseph has been getting to know Scottish winger Tommy Seymour in particular – the pair are rooming together – but the 25-year-old Englishman says the whole group is already bonding well.

“It’s been great to know all the guys and the coaches and the support staff. It’s been a very good week we are very happy with it,” he said.

“We’ve got a great group of boys here. I think, straight away, everyone started bonding and learning things off each other.

“I room with Tommy Seymour and I get on really well with him, and many of the other boys as well. We all get on incredibly well already.”

The British & Irish Lions squad is only set to gain further strength in the weeks to come as players complete their respective domestic seasons this weekend and next.

The absence of some players has not halted the progress of Joseph and the rest of the Lions squad this week however, with plenty of groundwork for the New Zealand Tour already laid.

“It’ll be great for the other boys to come in next week and more the following week to get everyone together and get us bonding,” Joseph added.

“It’s not been strange. It’s kind of new for a lot of us but it’s been a great week. We’ve done a lot of work, a lot of fitness and getting to grips with the new calls and the way we want to play.

“We almost have a full team to run through our shape with and go through some of our moves, but it’s been more conditioning-based. We have done a lot of hard graft.

“We know that’s what we’re going to need to do to win out there. It’s not been too much tactical stuff yet. I’m sure that will be included later on.”
