The talismanic captain has been out of action since suffering a groin injury in the Tri Nations opener against New Zealand in Wellington on July 5.
He is now three weeks into rehab following an operation and is recovering well.
The former Clermont Auvergne hooker, who recently moved back home to the Sharks, will continue his rehabilitation with muscle activation commencing this week.
South Africa head coach Peter de Villiers and team manager Andy Marinos told a press conference that they expect to have Smit back in a Springbok shirt towards the latter stages of November's tour.
The Boks have confirmed fixtures against Wales, Scotland and England on November 8, 15 and 22 respectively.

Fly-half Peter Grant underwent a shoulder operation last week and is expected to be back playing in six-eight weeks.
Ryan Kankowski sustained a Grade 2 sprain to his left sterno clavicular joint and is undergoing rehabilitation with The Sharks medical team. The Boks are hopeful that he will return to action in two-three weeks.
Joe van Niekerk has some calf stiffness following the intense training sessions of last week but he is likely to take full part in training later today.
Schalk Burger and Bryan Habana are both expected to be fit enough to be named in the matchday 22 for Saturday's game against Argentina in Johannesburg.
