The Ospreys prop was an unused replacement in Wales' opening autumn international with South Africa and has since missed the matches against Canada and New Zealand. He is now not expected to return to action until the start of the 2009/10 season.
Jones has won two Grand Slams with his country in the last three years and was seen as a serious contender to tour South Africa with the Lions in six months time.
His absence is the second substantial blow to his club and his country in the last week following Ian Evans' season-ending knee injury.
Duncan Jones had surgery to fix a chronic stress fracture in his right foot a week ago, and will be in plaster for up to 12 weeks and at this stage looks unlikely to feature again this season.
Ospreys and Wales team-mates Huw Bennett and Mike Phillips could make their comebacks over the Christmas period, however, while 2005 Lion Gavin Henson may appear in club colours even sooner, with the Heineken Cup clash with Benetton Treviso a possible return date.
