The 24-year-old is now expected to start at outside-half on the side's Northern Hemisphere tour in the absence of Tri Nations players Butch James and Peter Grant.
"I have spoken to Bok backline coach Dick Muir a lot about playing at fly-half, and he said that going forward, the Bok management saw me as a fly-half," Pienaar told the Pretoria News.
"I have said in the past that I wanted to specialise at scrumhalf, but I am willing to give fly-half a go. Dick and Peter de Villiers told me that they want to build combinations on this tour ahead of the Lions series next year, so it is a bit of a trial for me. We'll see how it goes and take it from there."
Pienaar is also likely to have the added responsibility of goalkicking on the November tour which includes tests against Wales, Scotland and England.
