"On behalf of the England squad I'm delighted for Graham and it's a well deserved honour," said Johnson, who became the first man to skipper the Lions on two tours when he led them to Australia in 2001.
Johnson and Rowntree go back a long way, with the pair playing together for over a decade for English giants Leicester and wearing the white of England and the red of the Lions at numerous occasions during their glittering playing careers.
"Having played alongside Graham for many years at club and international level and having seen him coach the England squad, I know what an asset he will be to the British & Irish Lions who he served so well as a squad member in 1997 and 2005."
