The year of the earliest Lions tour, a 21-man squad, along with managers Arthur Shrewsbury and James Lillywhite, travelled through New Zealand and Australia. They won 27, drew 5 and lost only 2 of their 35 rugby union matches. They also played 19 games under Victorian Rules, making it 54 matches in 21 weeks in both codes.

In 1899 the Lions played Australia for the first time in a Test match and the opening game in the four-match series was the first international Australia played. The Australians won in Sydney, but the Lions took the series 3-1.

The tour to South Africa in 1903 was the fifth tour by a British Isles team and the third to that particular country. The Lions lost the Test series to the Springboks, drawing twice, but losing the decider 8-0.

This tour to South Africa marked the official beginning of British and Irish rugby tours, with it being the first squad chosen by a selected committee from the four Home Unions.
