"I got off to a bad start and I was a bit bitter and sad after that first game against the Royal XV. But the lads I play with back home at Munster, Paulie and Rog, got around me and helped me get through it," said Earls.
"I'm happy with the way things have gone since then and I've really enjoyed the last couple of games.
"Playing for the Lions in a Test match is the highest achievement you can get and if it doesn't happen here, then the target will be to reach that goal in Australia in four years time. It's something to aspire to."
Utility back Earls was the notable wildcard pick in Ian McGeechan's squad. And the 21-year-old had difficulties on his debut in Phokeng as he spilled the ball four times in the opening quarter and picked up a painful shoulder injury.
But Earls believes the mental and physical damage of that torrid afternoon will hold his career in good stead for the future.
"This is my first season in senior rugby and I still have a lot to learn. I've always struggled with confidence, but the coaches and players here have been brilliant for me," he added.
"Being out here is a dream come true for me and I can't believe I've been running out on the pitch with all these players I used to watch and admire in the Six Nations. Hopefully, next season things will be a bit better and I won't make as many mistakes as I have done in the past."
