He barely put a foot wrong in scoring a try and adding 15 points with the boot as the Crusaders hit the 50-point mark for the first time against the Chiefs.
The Crusaders outscored their opponents by seven tries to two and regularly broke through the often flimsy Chiefs defence.
Carter converted tries by Aaron Mauger and Sam Broomhall and added a penalty to push the Crusaders out to a 17-6 lead by the 21st minute.
The Chiefs clawed back the deficit with a well-taken try by Sailosi Tagicakibau and with a conversion by David Hill, to add to his two earlier penalties, they were right back in it at 17-13.
A great solo try by Rico Gear was cancelled out by a good team try to Chiefs number eight Steven Bates to leave the score at 24-18 in the Crusaders' favour at the break.
Both teams started the second half with 14 men after All Blacks scrum-half Justin Marshall and Scott Linklater were sent to the sinbin for punching but it was all one-way traffic on the pitch as the Crusaders scored four unanswered tries.
Scott Hamilton ensured the Crusaders claimed the bonus point for scoring four tries or more before some lacklustre defending allowed Carter, Caleb Ralph and Tone Kopelani to touch down with Carter converting the final three to bring up the 50 points.
