Ella, who will coach the Australia Sevens team at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games next March, believes the only way the Wallabies could beat the All Blacks on their home soil is to be unpredictable.

"The All Blacks know Australia's game plan," Ella said.

"We need to spread the ball around more. We have nothing to lose so we should take every opportunity to throw the ball wide."

Australia have lost their last four Tests to rest firmly at the bottom of the Tri-Nations table without a win.

But victory in Auckland, no matter how remote that might seem, will prevent New Zealand from regaining the Tri-Nations title.

Ella supports the selection of dual international Mat Rogers at fly-half for the Test after injuries to Stephen Larkham, Elton Flatley and Matt Giteau left the number 10 cupboard bare for national coach Eddie Jones.

"If the match opens up at all, I think they should just let Matty go," Ella said.

"He'll get his hands on the ball (at fly-half) a lot more and he will have that unpredictability."

Wallabies selector and former Test back Tim Horan agrees that Rogers has the skill and experience to handle the pivot role.

"One of the strengths of his game that rarely gets the recognition it deserves is his kicking, which will play a key role in the Wallabies' game plan as they will aim to dominate field position," Horan wrote in his weekly column in The Australian newspaper.

"The other alternative was Lachlan MacKay, who has been selected as reserve.

"Having played only a handful of Super 12 games, it may have been a bit premature to throw him into the cauldron-like atmosphere of a Bledisloe Cup match."

Horan has endured first hand the difficulties of winning at Eden Park.

"In six Bledisloe Cup Tests at the venue, I never experienced victory," he said.
