Wilkinson missed out on selection for the recent Lions tour of South Africa but Corry is certain that the new Toulon fly-half still has what it takes to regain his position as one of the planet's leading players.

Critics have questioned Wilkinson's ability to recapture his pre-2004 form but his former skipper has no doubt that the 30-year-old remains key to England's chances of success under Martin Johnson.

"In terms of somebody who can play Martin Johnson's game, he is vital," Corry, who won seven Test caps for the Lions before retiring at the end of last season, told BBC Radio 5 live.

"He brings his mental attributes, but also his kicking and the calmness he brings to the backline. He is able to go out and implement exactly what a manager wants.

"I think he'll be more than a force, I think he is the missing piece.

"Everyone wants to see a fit Jonny Wilkinson. He is fundamental for a successful England side."

Wilkinson has been included in England's 32-man Elite Player Squad and will join up with his international colleagues next week before returning to France for the start of the French Championship on August 14.
