British & Irish Lions fly-half Jonny Wilkinson is continuing the rehabilitation process after his latest knee injury – and is desperate to play at the weekend.

The 25-year-old Newcastle Falcons player will find out on Thursday whether he is to be passed fit for Saturday’s European Cup quarter-final trip to Stade Francais.

Wilkinson told the Evening Chronicle: "I am running around, jogging at a fair pace, hopping and lifting big weights.

"The only drawback is I still have a bit of pain but physically I am at the stage I was after four, five or maybe even six weeks after the last injury."

He added: "I am still going day by day.

"There are no goals for playing again yet but maybe I could make the European game – that would be an incredible scenario."
