Jonny Wilkinson believes he is ‘still on the road’ for the British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand this summer after his latest comeback from injury.

The England fly-half played his first full match for Newcastle Falcons against London Irish on Saturday and revealed he had "got into some awkward situations" but was satisfied with his performance.

Wilkinson, out since March with knee trouble, said in his column in The Times: "I missed a couple of kicks but I came out [of the game] without any problems.

"What I am delighted about is that Newcastle are now in the Zurich wildcard play-offs with maybe another two games to go.

"It is important for the club and gives me another opportunity to prove my fitness and well-being for Sir Clive Woodward.

"Clive left a message saying he was glad I had come through the game. I am still on the road, so to speak, for the British Isles’ tour to New Zealand.

"I haven’t been told ‘if you are fit you are definitely going’. I haven’t a clue if there is a timetable or a cut-off point. I am waiting to find out myself.

"I have so much respect for Clive for the way he has done this. It keeps everything clear and simple for me.

"I need to prove my fitness but I have never been fitter physically and I feel fantastic."
