Former British & Irish Lion Gregor Townsend fears a lengthy spell on the sidelines after discovering he has chipped a bone in his left ankle.

The veteran Border Reivers stand-off was examined by surgeon Gordon MacKay after the injury which forced him to retire from the Celtic League match against Llanelli Scarlets last weekend.

Townsend is due to have a scan on Wednesday to ascertain the complete extent of the injury.
