New Zealand goal-kicker Dan Carter will be hoping practice makes perfect after a wayward night in front of the posts despite a handsome Tri-Nations win over Australia.

Carter kicked only five of his eight attempts at goal during the All Blacks’ 32-12 Bledisloe Cup victory over the Wallabies in Christchurch.

That ratio is not satisfactory for the high standards of the All Blacks’ top points scorer and he has already set his sights on a swift improvement.

He said: "I’ll have to have a look at it I’ll definitely be out there practising, trying to put it right. I might be rushing a little bit."

Carter, who did score 12 points at Jade Stadium, believes the defeat of the Wallabies was a necessary step up after unconvincing performances against Ireland and Australia.

"The intensity and desire to put on the black jersey was still there and the guys wanted to play as good as they could for their country," he added.

"But there is a sense in the squad we want to step up from those games. The intensity level wasn’t quite what it should have been."
