Loftus gets thumbs-up

Ian McGeechan, head coach of the 2009 British & Irish Lions, and tour manager Gerald Davies have visited Loftus Versfeld Stadium as part of their recce of South Africa in preparation for next year’s tour.

Ian McGeechan, head coach of the 2009 British & Irish Lions, and tour manager Gerald Davies have visited Loftus Versfeld Stadium as part of their recce of South Africa in preparation for next year’s tour.

Commenting on the visit McGeechan said: "I am delighted to be looking around all the venues and to be back at Loftus this morning to get a feel for what will be the second Test venue – it has certainly changed a lot since I played here in 1974.

"Gerald and I have had the chance to get a real sense of South Africa as a country over the past few days and can now begin the process of putting together the structures that we need to get right for the tour from the training grounds to hotels."

Davies added: "We have had a tremendous welcome everywhere we have been and we are getting the sense that there is great expectation around the Lions tour and to think that we will be here in 12 months is something to savour."
