Good news for Wales and Blues

Wales flanker Martyn Williams will not require surgery on an ankle injury he suffered during Cardiff Blues’ win over Ulster on Friday night.

The hugely experienced openside left the field early during the 16-15 victory at the Arms Park and it was feared that he would need an operation before he could return to action.

However, a scan has revealed that is not the case, although Williams has torn a ligament on the inside of his left ankle.

The 33-year-old double Lions tourist is expected to be back playing in time for the Blues’ opening Heineken Cup pool fixture against Calvisano on October 11.

That would see the 81-times-capped former Pontypridd man remain in contention for a place in the Wales squad for the forthcoming autumn internationals against South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and Australia this November.
